go to www.nytimes.com for 33 pages of articles about me, Milton Dodd
look for the flashing square that says MILTON D.

Milton Dodd, the Man, the Myth is about me and my music among other aspects of my life. It is based on a true story, my story. I did the things in the movie. I’ve heard people say it was good, but it wasn’t Milton. They Don’t Know. I did do those things. I even dated hot women/girls. I did all those things the Navy Seal Team 2 says I did. The movie stars Dave Chappelle (Half Baked),
Benicio Del Toro (Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas){he changed his name},
Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers),
Helena Bonham Carter (Fight Club),
and others. Dave Chappelle is my imagination. Benicio Del Toro is me. I was the first to know we were making a movie. I helped cast the film but didn’t see or write the script. I’ve heard only good things about the movie from those who watched the whole thing. I hope you go see it!}(go to milton.c to watch the trailer!)

the Milton D. deal is real. You do have to ask for it or it won’t be there! Ask someone who works there, please. Ask for the Milton D. Deal by name. For details, look at the bottom of this blog in “Milton Dodd = Musician”.

CHANNEL 82: This is the show.
Not that previous soap opera of a normal milton
I’m not normal
I’m a great musician!
{ These pictures are of me in my youth. }

Your favorite artists chose my songs to be on their albums. I never put a song on an album. The producers who provided my songs to the famous artists paid nothing to me for the music. If you think you’re getting the short end of the stick, think again: You get 308 albums (that’s days of music for $1 at the store or free at milton.c…About the problem of maintaining variety in the music: there are so many divergent artists who use my music, variety is guaranteed. I just want to reiterate, it’s an honor, but I didn’t choose to be on any album. The artists chose my music over my contemporaries…I am far from Milli Vanilli, I am the opposite!
All I did was practice loudly in my room and now my practice is on everybody’s album! I am not ripping anybody off!
Music is about getting high.
It’s about playing and finding a trigger to a natural high
fed by the notes.
When I play good music, I get high
and not only on weed and alcohol.
I reach a peak where each note is a further
step upwards.
When I get a groove going,
I could yell, I could scream…
All the power and control falling into place.
It’s about getting high.
and like many highs
one would like to do it as often as possible.
Milton Blansett Dodd
July 23, 2010
p.s. for those who think music is just about drinking and getting high on drugs,
I was getting high on music many years before I began to drink or smoke.
…But OK, if you want to get high, look near the bottom of this first section, Milton’s Library, below 99 which is out of place after 105. Psychoactives get one high. Don’t mention getting high to the people who work there, please. Go to erowid.org to find out how to use and/or grow the psychoactives.

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

THERE ARE LITERALLY WELL OVER 550 BOOKS in part or in full TO BE READ FREE BELOW, WITH AT LEAST 340 FULL TEXTS, 8 of which are authors’ “complete works” I say Well Over and At Least because I counted serieses as one or two and there are a ton of books to download or view within the same area as my reommendations.
The following are additions to my library which I am constantly creating, made of things I’ve read and things I want to read. I wanted to introduce the reader to books I like and love. There’s a lot of:
alternative spirituality, Wicca, Shamanism, Magick, classics from Beats and Hippies and generally things I think of as cool.
Over 276 complete books, this site’s choicest pieces which I really do recommend alot are found below in Milton Dodd = Witch, look for the title “Milton Dodd = Witch” in large white letters at the beginning of the fifth section of this blog.

I.
There is a problem with the links in this addition to Milton Dodd’s Blog. I can’t underline and I’m having to ask you in this section to highlight, copy/paste and place the links in your browser. I realize now that even copy/pasting won’t work because the link runs off the page.
////////////////////////////////////
I will prompt to you the website where you can look up the title and/or author and download there. The main sites I use are
www.4shared.com ,
www.google.com/books ,
www.amazon.com ,
www.truly-free.org .
You can make a shortcut on your desktop to each of these sites and do away with a lot of typing. Copy the title and author of the book, then hit the desktop shortcut and paste the title/author into the search field.
There are a couple books available at other sites, but so far their url’s are short and you can copy/paste them. I apologize for the inconvenience.
–The books in this first section do not have working links that can be clicked. However, in the following sections the books have links directly to online reading or download sites. Through the first sections, books should be labeled as being in full or excerpt/previews but in Milton Dodd=Witch if it’s not labeled as an excerpt, one should assume that it is the full text.

Writing of Writingg00000000000000000000000000000000000
Writing informs the world of it’s characteristics. Writing creates existance and is so close to perception and the mental realm that one can find meaning in and share pure thought in description. There are many levels to writing. Writing creates a vault of ideas involving time, place, character, feeling and many other factors. As a kernel contains the entire plant, it’s a vault that can be re-opened and it”s contents distributed to those who speak the language. Writing is therefore an individual world given to be experienced by many. Hopefully writing will influence our mood positively as a bridge is built to be crossed. Great writers have the reponsiblity of making their readers satisfied that they have learned something worthwhile.
Learn something worthwhile from these texts. The authors of these books offer you an experience of intricate detail and broad swashes of color. Have an open mind and you will recieve the lands, ladies and lambs of your dreams!
lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

A statement of Precaution:
I do not believe everything proposed in these texts. Rather, I pick and choose my own eclectic blend of ideas. I hope you will join me in expanding our world views by reading of wordly things. There’s a saying, “No man is an island”. I take this to mean that we are all influenced by outside forces. It is those outside forces that I want to introduce you to.
Bona Suerte!

Getting Started:
I’ve highlighted the book and the site it’s found on. Go to the site, for example, www.google.com/books, and type in the search area the name of the book and/or the author and it’ll come up. Click on it and press down to easily turn the pages.
At www.4shared.com, search the title given, click on it when it comes up then download, save and open. Do not hide the download (by leaving the little box checked) so you will be able to open it from the download box. When you download, your text goes to My Documents or My Downloads. Once you sign up for 4shared, you don’t need to sign up for anything else at the 4shared site, even when prompted on a download type that has a blue background.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
When you do get the download type with the blue background, when the command box comes up after download, X out of the command box in the middle of the screen and cancel setup, then close the command box, your text will load then.

THE ARGUEMENT FOR READING BOOKS:
Books contain words.
Words stimulate the senses.
The senses make up reality.
Our universe is either percieved or non-existant:
Out of sight, out of mind.
Experiences of all the senses bring about enlightenment.
Enlightenment, if you will, or higher intelligence.
Reading often, raises the IQ.
Raising the IQ is the goal of learning.
Learning is what we do from birth to death.

34. The Sky Clears: Poetry of the American Indians by A. Grove Day {nature described poetically, and powerful imagery} long excerpt <
Quote from A. Grove Day
“Songs were the most important instruments of the medicine men, corresponding to our priests and physicians, but any person could by means of dreams and visions find a personal song to help him in time of need. The best epitome of the function of poetry in the life of the American Indian is given by F.W. Hodge: “Most Indian rituals can be classed as poetry. They always relate to serious subjects and are expressed in dignified language, and the words chosen to clothe the thought generally make rythm… The picturesque quality of Indian speech lend itself to poetic conceits and expressions. The few words of a song will, to the Indian, portray a cosmic belief, presnt the mystery of death, or evoke the memory of joy or grief; to him the terse words project the thought or emotion from the background of his tribal life and experience, and make a song vibrant with poetic meaning.”–The Sky Clears by A. Grove Day.

Quote from The Four Agreements by Ruiz:

“The first agreement is to be impeccable with your word. It sounds very
simple, but it is very, very powerful.
Why your word? Your word is the power that you have to create. Your
word is the gift that comes directly from God. The Gospel of John in
the Bible, speaking of the creation of the universe, says, “In the
beginning there was the word, and the word was with God, and the
word is God.” Through the word you express your creative power. It is
through the word that you manifest everything. Regardless of what
language you speak, your intent manifests through the word. What
you dream, what you feel, and what you really are, will all be
manifested through the word.
The word is not just a sound or a written symbol. The word is a force; it
is the power you have to express and communicate, to think, and
thereby to create the events in your life. You can speak. What other
animal on the planet can speak? The word is the most powerful tool
you have as a human; it is the tool of magic. But like a sword with two
edges, your word can create the most beautiful dream, or your word
can destroy everything around you. One edge is the misuse of the
word, which creates a living hell. The other edge is the impeccability
of the word, which will only create beauty, love, and heaven on
earth. Depending upon how it is used, the word can set you free, or it
can enslave you even more than you know. All the magic you possess
is based on your word. Your word is pure magic, and misuse of your
word is black magic.”–Ruiz, The Four Agreements.

51a. Make a Scrying Mirror at Home
I’ve been making magic mirrors for skrying ever since I learned how. Here’s how to make a great and effective skrying mirror for less than $10 and probably for nothing since you likely have the essentials at your house.
essentials: 1 clean, preferably framed window or picture frame of a size you desire
2. black paint
task: 1. pour, spray on or brush an even and thin layer of paint on one side of the glass, the opposite side will be viewed
(Don’t leave streaks or get the paint on the other side of the glass–the main idea is to have a thin, even coat, however you achieve it)
2. Let it dry.
3. I’ve painted an oval and magic symbols on the viewing side but this is unneccesary and could draw the eye.

“Some abide with the Elves,
Some abide with the Aesir,
Or with the Wise Vanir,
Some still hold the sons of mankind.
These be the book-runes
And the runes of good help,
And all the taboo-runes
And the runes of much might;
To whomso they may avail
Unbewildered, unspoilt;
They are wholesome to have:
Thrive thou with these then,
When thou hast learnt their lore,
Til the Gods end thy life-days.”I haven’t found an e-book of this text.

57. http://www.4shared.com/document/Zml7h_qW/Futhark_-_a_handbook_of_rune_m.htm
“The first step in understanding rune lore is the understanding of the concept rune. A rune is not merely a letter in an old Germanic alphabet, but rather it bears the primary definition of “secret” or “mysterium.” This basic meaning may be easily compared to the use of the term arcana in connection with the Tarot. Therefore, a rune is primarily a secret, holy concept or idea that must be expressed or dealt with in concealment. Throughout this work “rune” should be understood first in the sense of a secret and holy concept.”

63. Here is a long quote from Paul Williams’s Das Energi
It’s a classic and will make you feel good.
Paul Williams is the creator of Crawdaddy, the first rock music critisism magazine in 1966. Here is a link to his site: http://paulwilliams.com/
Das Energi:
p.78-79
Sooner or later a person begins to notice that everything that happens
to him is perfect, relates directly to who he is, had to happen, was meant to happen, plays its little role in fulfilling his destiny.
When he encounters difficulty, it no longer occurs to him to complain–he has learned to expect nothing, has learned that loss and frustration are a part of life, and come at their proper time–instead he asks himself, why is this happening?…by which he means,
what can I learn from this, how will it strengthen me, make me more aware? He lets himself be strengthened, lets himself grow, just as he lets himself relax and enjoy (and grow) when life is gentle to him.
Strengthened by this simple notion, simple awareness, that he is always the perfect person for the situation he finds himself in, a person begins to feel more and more in tune with his inner nature, begins to find it easier and easier to do what he knows is right. All chance events appear to him to be intended; all intentional actions he clearly percieves as part of the workings of Chance. Anxiety seldom troubles him; he knows his death will come at its proper moment; he knows his actions are right and therefore whatever comes to pass as a result of them will be what is meant to happen. When he does feel anxiety, he realizes it is because of that thing he’s been meaning to do but hasn’t done, some unfulfilled relationship he’s been aware of but…He perceives the anxiety as a message that he’ll have to stop hesitating if he wants to stay high… He knows that he is out of tune because he’s let himself get out of tune; and because he knows he can, he begins to take action. He enjoys his high life; does not enjoy anxiety; so he stops hesitating and does what he has to do.
He does not live in a state of bliss, though perhaps he feels himself moving toward one–or toward something, he doesn’t know what it is but it is the way he has to go, the journey towards it is the only life he enjoys, it is hard; it is exciting, it is satisfying, lonely, joyous, frustrating, puzzling, enlightening, real; it is his life, that’s all. He accepts it.
Sooner or later a person begins to notice.

74. Quote from Rainer Maria Rilke
<i
“We must accept our reality as vastly as we possibly can; everything must be possible within it. This is in the end the only kind of courage that is required of us: the courage to face the strangest, most unusual, most inexplicable experiences that can meet us. The fact that people have in this sense been cowardly has done infinite harm to life: the experiences that are called “apparitions,” the whole so-called “spirit world,” death, all these Things that are so closely related to us, have through our daily defensiveness been so entirely pushed out of life that the senses with which we might have been able to grasp them have atrophied. To say nothing of God.”–Rilke, Letters to a Young Poetavailable below.
75. Summoning Spirits, The Art of Magical Evocation by Konstantinos available in full at www.4shared.com
From Summoning Spirits:
“The technique we will be dealing with in this set is one of the most famous ones
in the occult world. Skrying, or crystal gazing, has been used by magicians and
prophets for thousands of years to make predictions and communicate with
spirits. The reason crystal balls and magic mirrors allow one to perform these
magical tasks is simple: They open doorways to the astral plane.
When you skry, your astral sight and often your hearing attune to that
plane’s vibrations and allow you to perceive what is occurring there. When
skrying to determine what will happen in the future or what the answer to a
certain question is, the seer often views symbolic images that answer his or her
question or scenes of actual incidents that have occurred or will occur. This is
because when doing this type of work, we too, like the astral spirits I talked
about in Chapter 1, access the Akasha, where all the information in the universe
is available. This is one of the beneficial uses of skrying.
Skrying can also teach you, without you realizing it, how to use your astral
senses with your eyes open. This is an important ability that must be developed
before trying evocation to the physical plane. It will be dealt with later on,
as success in skrying is a prerequisite to effective open-eyed visualization.”–Konstantinos

80. Quote from Jim Morrison’s The Lords and New Creatures
<i
“Film confers a kind of spurious eternity
Each Film depends upon all the others and drives
you on to others. Cinema was a novelty, a scientific
toy, until a sufficient body of works had been
amassed, enough to create an intermittent other
world, a powerful, infinite mythology to be dipped
into at will.
Films have an illusion of timelessness fostered
by their regular, indomitable appearance.
The appeal of cinema lies in the fear of death.” Jim Morrison

Prozac Nation: Young and Depressed in America, A Memoir by Elizabeth Wurtzel (63 page excerpt–search the word “coke” and other words to read more pages) available at www.amazon.com This is a strong text about the author’s struggle with depression, addiction, Harvard and other pressures. I picked it up because of the cover and learned I loved the lady. She’s a Rock and Roll critic. Cool book. Here’s a Quote:
They ask me if I’ve done any drugs in the last twenty-four hours, and I say no. Then I say, I guess I smoked some pot and snorted some coke also, but that was just to make the Ecstasy last longer. I also admit to them that I had some beer, maybe a couple sea breezes somewhere in there, too. And then the doctor asks if I have a substance abuse problem, and all I can do is laugh. I laugh really hard and really loud, a howling hyena laugh because what I’m thinking is how nice it would be if my problem were drugs, if my problem weren’t my whole damn life and how little relief from it the drugs provide. I keep laughing, on and on, like a nut, until the doctor agrees to give me some Valium and keeps me, half prone, on the adjustable examining table until I calm down.

Quote from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass (available at www.4shared.com under LEAVES OF GRASS.pdf)
“I open my scuttle at night and see the far-sprinkled systems,
And all I see multiplied as high as I can cipher edge but the rim of the farther systems.
Wider and wider they spread, expanding, always expanding,
Outward and outward and forever outward.
My sun has his sun and round him obediently wheels,
He joins with his partners a group of superior circuit,
And greater sets follow, making specks of the greatest inside them.
There is no stoppage and never can be stoppage,
If I, you, and the worlds, and all beneath or upon their surfaces, were this moment reduced back to a pallid
float, it would not avail the long run,
We should surely bring up again where we now stand,
And surely go as much farther, and then farther and farther.
A few quadrillions of eras, a few octillions of cubic leagues, do not hazard the span or make it impatient,
They are but parts, any thing is but a part.
See ever so far, there is limitless space outside of that,
Count ever so much, there is limitless time around that.”
86.
Quote from Henry David Thoreau’s Walden (available below)_
“Most men, even in this comparatively free country,
through mere ignorance and mistake, are so occupied
with the factitious cares and superfluously coarse labors
of life that its finer fruits cannot be plucked by
them. Their fingers, from excessive toil, are too clumsy
and tremble too much for that. Actually, the laboring
man has not leisure for a true integrity day by day; he
cannot afford to sustain the manliest relations to men;
his labor would be depreciated in the market. He has
no time to be anything but a machine. How can he
remember well his ignorance- which his growth requires-
who has so often to use his knowledge? We
should feed and clothe him gratuitously sometimes,
and recruit him with our cordials, before we judge of
him. The finest qualities of our nature, like the bloom
on fruits, can be preserved only by the most delicate
handling. Yet we do not treat ourselves nor one another
thus tenderly.”
87.
Quote from The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker (Hellraiser)(available in full below):
“Encouraged by his success, Frank proceeded to work on the box feverishly, quickly finding fresh alignments of fluted slot and oiled peg which in their turn revealed further intricacies. And with each solution-each new half twist or pull-a further melodic element was brought into play-the tune counterpointed and developed until the initial caprice was all but lost in ornamentation.
At some point in his labors, the bell had begun to ring-a steady somber tolling. He had not heard, at least not consciously. But when the puzzle was almost finished-the mirrored innards of the box unknotted-he became aware that his stomach churned so violently at the sound of the bell it might have been ringing half a lifetime.
He looked up from his work. For a few moments he supposed the noise to be coming from somewhere in the street outside-but he rapidly dismissed that notion. It had been almost midnight before he’d begun to work at the birdmaker’s box; several hours had gone by-hours he would not have remembered passing but for the evidence of his watch-since then. There was no church in the city-however desperate for adherents-that would ring a summoning bell at such an hour.”

O Shining, Splendorous APHKALLHU!
What God have I offended? What Goddess? What sacrifice have I failed to make? What
Unknown Evil have I committed, that my going out should be thus accompanied by the
fearful howlings of a hundred wolves?
May the heart of my God return to its place!
May the heart of my Goddess return to its place!
May the God I do not know be quieted toward me!
May the Goddess I do now know he quieted toward me!
May the heart of the Unknown God return to its place for me!
May the heart of the Unknown Goddess return to its place for me!
I have traveled on the Spheres, and the Spheres do not protect me. I have descended into
the Abyss, and the Abyss does not protect me. I have walked to the tops of mountains,
and the mountains do not protect me. I have walked the Seas, and the Seas do not protect
me.
The Lords of the Wind rush about me and are angered. The Lords of the Earth crawl
about my feet and are angered. The Spirits have forgotten me.”

110. Quote from Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet (available below in Milton Dodd=Witch:
And to speak of solitude again, it becomes clearer and clearer that fundamentally this is nothing that one can choose or refrain from. We are solitary. We can delude ourselves about this and act as if it were not true. That is all. But how much better it is to recognize that we are alone; yes, even to begin from this realization. It will, of course, make us dizzy; for all points that our eyes used to rest on are taken away from us, there is no longer anything near us, and everything far away is infinitely far. A man taken out of his room and, almost without preparation or transition, placed on the heights of a great mountain range, would feel something like that: an unequalled insecurity, an abandonment to the nameless, would almost annihilate him. He would feel he was falling or think he was being catapulted out into space or exploded into a thousand pieces: what a colossal lie his brain would have to invent in order to catch up with and explain the situation of his senses. That is how all distances, all measures, change for the person who becomes solitary; many of these changes occur suddenly and then, as with the man on the mountaintop, unusual fantasies and strange feelings arise, which seem to grow out beyond all that is bearable. But it is necessary for us to experience that too

107. Milton Dodd = Shaman
Although I am hesitant to admit it, I’m a Shaman. I’ve met with leaders and holy men/women of the Lakota and Mattaponi tribes. They’ve encouraged my studies in Native American spirituality. People like a Shaman of the Mattaponi tribe, Edith Kuhns, who says that I am a Shaman and gives me advice. To an Amazonian Shaman named Kwergy who was shown what I do and pronounced me a Shaman. The Navy Seals that I know from Seal Team 2 also let me know I was a Shaman and they are rarely wrong. I’m saying I’m hesitant to admit it because who doesn’t want the power of a Shaman and who would believe the claim of being one? It could cause some misunderstanding and make people disregard many true things I say.
I heal, though. I want you to feel good, My music, my art and my writing and my magick all tie into this. I want to create things which make you glow. In ancient societies, the doctor was the shaman and his job was to make the patient feel good. Even if the patient died a few days later, it was considered beneficial to the patient that he was able to feel good for a day or two.
To cure the body, one heals the spirit. Animism is a belief central to Shamanism as I know it. Animism is the belief that most things have a soul {for the book, Animism, go to www.sacred-texts.com and look under Shamanism}.
Kwergy says that rock doesn’t have a spirit. This may be true, but some rocks are conduits for souls. There is a certain type of rock called silicon which recieves impressions burnt into it by the sun’s light. Making a shadow on this rock can transfer the images to very thin layers of the rock which can be peeled and turned into a movie. If the rock hasn’t recieved light for a long time after it did recieve light, there can be very old movies to be had of people and animals, etc. living before cameras were invented. Their souls are captured in the rock, the same belief that led Native Americans to shy from camera weilding whites.
I’m recieving in the mail a bear claw necklace kit and I feel it is a significant purchase. It will help me focus my Shamanic energy. People often ask me (most of the time, disapprovingly), “What does it do?” To which I have one reply.
Like a painting or a book, it takes one to a different place, a different mood and outlook, all by looking at or interacting with it. Books are filled with power and so are magical objects.
A sacred or magickal symbol or object will connect one with it’s history or the intention-during-creation by embedding an impression on our psyche. When you focus your attention on something sacred, you could be taken on a long journey much like when words fire the imagination…That’s what magickal symbols and sacred objects are meant to do…put one in a different state of mind more conducive to the magical or the sacred.
I’m schizophrenic. Historically, very many shamen were what is today considered Schizophrenic. My reality warps and the everyday life seems like a drug trip. Loss of reality, living in multiple realities is a characteristic of Schizophrenia.
I’ve also been in high states involving street and Pharmaceutical drugs. Not counting the pharmaceuticals, I’ve taken (the times I felt something)
Alcohol, Marijuana, LSD, San Pedro, Salvia, Damiana, Opium, Huffed rubber cement or gasoline, not that that makes one a Shaman, but I have seen the other side from more than one perspective, just by Looking alive and staying well or staying alive and looking well, I have my reality.
I’m a Shaman. Shamanism is not a “look” or a locality. I don’t have a bowl cut or walk half naked in the jungle. I’m a Virginia native from Norfolk and I now live in the country near Blacksburg, VA. Shamanism is a religion and a practice. Much like the religion and practice of Witchcraft (the Craft), one can strive to be a Shaman and live, learning Shamanism as a way of life, not necessarily handed down through generations. I’ve incorporated into my daily life the things I’ve learned from teachers and books and I explore Dreamtime or the Non-ordinary reality on my own. There are a few books on Shamanism below, don’t disregard them, learn them.
Milton Dodd, Sept3,2010

“><i
A broader definition (of shaman) than this would include any kind of person who is in control of his or her state of trance, even if this does not involve a soul journey, as in Korea. In these senses, shamans are quite different fom other kinds of spirit medium who are possessed and dominated by spirits as and when the spirits themselves chooose and who then need to be exorcized. But under controlled conditions, his or her “mastery” of the spirits remains highly precarious. The shaman’s profession is considered psychically very dangerous and there is a constant risk of insanity or death.”
“A shaman works in partnership with the spirits. In the shamanic experience, feelings of exaltation and joy are experienced only as a counterpart to feelings of fear. A shaman is someone who can handle forces on which ordinary people’s lives depend but which also fill them with terror.”

Quote from A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess:
He looked a malenky bit poogly when he viddied the four
of us like that, coming up so quiet and polite and smiling, but
he said: “Yes? What is it?” in a very loud teacher-type goloss,
as if he was trying to show us he wasn’t poogly. I said:
“I see you have books under your arm, brother. It is indeed
a rare pleasure these days to come across somebody that still
reads, brother.”
“Oh,” he said, all shaky. “Is it? Oh, I see.” And he kept looking
from one to the other of we four, finding himself now like
in the middle of a very smiling and polite square.
“Yes,” I said. “It would interest me greatly, brother, if you
would kindly allow me to see what books those are that you
have under your arm. I like nothing better in this world than a
good clean book, brother.”
“Clean,” he said. “Clean, eh?” And then Pete skvatted these
three books from him and handed them round real skorry.

112. Quote from Bright Lights, Big City by Jay McInerney:

“You have always wanted to be a writer. Getting the job at the magazine was only your first step toward literary celebrity. You used to write what you believed to be urbane sketches infinitely superior to those appearing in the magazine every week. You sent them up to Fiction; they came back with polite notes,. “Not quite for us now, but thanks for letting us see this.” You would try to interpret the notes: what about the word now–do they mean that you should submit this again later? It wasn’t the notes so much as the effort of writing that discouraged you. You never stopped thinking of yourself as a writer biding his time in the Department of Factual Verification. But between the job and the life there wasn’t much time left over for emotion recollected in tranquility. For a few weeks you got up at six to compose short stories at the kitchen table while Amanda slept in the other room. Then your night life started getting more interesting and complicated, and climbing out of bed became harder and harder. You were gathering experience for a novel. You went to parties with writers, cultivated a writerly persona. You wanted to be Dylan Thomas without the paunch, F. Scott Fitzgerald without the crack-up. You wanted to skip over the dull grind of actual creation. After a hard day of work on other people’s manuscripts–knowing in your heart that you could do better–the last thing you wanted to do was to go home and write. You wanted to go out. Amanda was the fashion model and you worked for the famous magazine. People were happy to meet you and to invite you to their parties. So much was going on. Of course, mentally you were always taking notes. Saving it all up. Waiting for the day when you would sit down and write your masterpiece.”
——from Bright Lights, Big City by Jay McInerney
112a. Quote from The Complete Golden Dawn by Israel Regardie

The second, and I think the most important one, is that the
Watchtower rituals described in the book named above could be employed as self-initiatory rituals.
Again, assuming that this is factual, then we have reached a stage which fulfills the original
promise of some of my early writing on the Golden Dawn – which was that since the Hermetic Order of
the Golden Dawn was now defunct, the isolated student here, there and everywhere, could now be his
own initiator. This does not preclude the possibility that new temples might arise and have arisen in
various parts of the world independently of any other temple. Several new temples have in recent
years been formulated and are functioning very sucessfully, with new temples emerging even now.
In stating that the isolated student could now be his own initiator, one important phrase is
rendered imperative. And that is he must be persistent and as thoroughgoing and exacting as if he
were an initiator in a regularly constituted Golden Dawn temple under the constant scrutiny of
officialdom and higher adept authorities. The responsibility for progress is thus placed inexorably on
the student or candidate himself. As I see it – and I have watched this on a very few students – each
elemental initiation or Watchtower ceremony requires its repetition several times. One student whom I
am thinking of at this juncture has performed the whole Opening by Watchtower ceremonies some 50 or
60 times. It is therefore my opinion that she has initiated herself as effectively and as positively as any
temple initiatory hierophantic team could possibly do. All the important “command” symbols of
elemental significance are altogether imbedded in her aura or energy field so that should she visit
their sphere of activity, via skrying in the spirit vision, they would not regard her as an enemy alien
invading their hallowed circle. Instead, she would be regarded as friendly and as a divine helper because
she carries, as it were, the only correct and valid passport recognized by them as an official password.–Israel Regardie, The Complete Golden Dawn
112b. Quote from Book 4 by Aleister Crowley:

There is, however, one form of miracle which certainly happens, the influence of the genius. There is no known analogy in Nature. One cannot even think of a “super-dog” transforming the {7} world of dogs, whereas in the history of mankind this happens with regularity and frequency. Now here are three “super-men,” all at loggerheads. What is there in common between Christ, Buddha, and Mohammed? Is there any one point upon which all three are in accord?
No point of doctrine, no point of ethics, no theory of a “hereafter” do they share, and yet in the history of their lives we find one identity amid many diversities.
Buddha was born a Prince, and died a beggar.
Mohammed was born a beggar, and died a Prince.
Christ remained obscure until many years after his death.
Elaborate lives of each have been written by devotees, and there is one thing common to all three — an omission. We hear nothing of Christ between the ages of twelve and thirty. Mohammed disappeared into a cave. Buddha left his palace, and went for a long while into the desert.
Each of them, perfectly silent up to the time of the disappearance, came back and immediately began to preach a new law.
This is so curious that it leaves us to inquire whether the histories of other great teachers contradict or confirm.
Moses led a quiet life until his slaying of the Egyptian. He then flees into the land of Midian, and we hear nothing of what he did there, yet immediately on his return he turns the whole place upside down. Later on, too, he absents himself on Mount Sinai for a few days, and comes back with the Tables of the Law in his hand.
St. Paul (again), after his adventure on the road to Damascus, goes into the desert of Arabia for many years, and on his return overturns the Roman Empire. Even in the legends of savages we find the same thing universal; somebody who is nobody in particular goes away for a longer or shorter period, and comes back as the “great medicine man”; but nobody ever knows exactly what happened to him.
Making every possible deduction for fable and myth, we get this one coincidence. A nobody goes away, and comes back a somebody. This is not to be explained in any of the ordinary ways.
There is not the smallest ground for the contention that these were from the start exceptional men. Mohammed would hardly have driven a camel until he was thirty-five years old if he had possessed any talent or ambition. St. Paul had much original talent; but he is the least of the five. Nor do they seem to have possessed any of the usual materials of power, such as rank, fortune, or influence.
Moses was rather a big man in Egypt when he left; he came back as a mere stranger. {8}
Christ had not been to China and married the Emperor’s daughter.
Mohammed had not been acquiring wealth and drilling soldiers.
Buddha had not been consolidating any religious organizations.
St. Paul had not been intriguing with an ambitious general.
Each came back poor; each came back alone.
What was the nature of their power? What happened to them in their absence?
History will not help us to solve the problem, for history is silent.
We have only the accounts given by the men themselves.
It would be very remarkable should we find that these accounts agree.
Of the great teachers we have mentioned Christ is silent; the other four tell us something; some more, some less.
Buddha goes into details too elaborate to enter upon in this place; but the gist of it is that in one way or another he got hold of the secret force of the World and mastered it.
Of St. Paul’s experiences, we have nothing but a casual illusion to his having been “caught up into Heaven, and seen and heard things of which it was not lawful to speak.”
Mohammed speaks crudely of his having been “visited by the Angel Gabriel,” who communicated things from “God.”
Moses says that he “beheld God.”
Diverse as these statements are at first sight, all agree in announcing an experience of the class which fifty years ago would have been called supernatural, to-day may be called spiritual, and fifty years hence will have a proper name based on an understanding of the phenomenon which occurred.
Theorists have not been at a loss to explain; but they differ.
The Mohammedan insists that God is, and did really send Gabriel with messages for Mohammed: but all others contradict him. And from the nature of the case proof is impossible.
The lack of proof has been so severely felt by Christianity (and in a much less degree by Islam) that fresh miracles have been manufactured almost daily to support the tottering structure. Modern thought, rejecting these miracles, has adopted theories involving epilepsy and madness. As if organization could spring from disorganization! Even if epilepsy were the cause of these great movements which have caused civilization after civilization to arise from barbarism, it would merely form an argument for cultivating epilepsy.

Of course great men will never conform with the standards of little men, and he whose mission it is to overturn the world can hardly escape the title of revolutionary. The fads of a period always furnish terms of abuse. The fad of Caiaphas was Judaism, and the Pharisees told him that Christ “blasphemed.” Pilate was a loyal Roman; to him {9} they accused Christ of “sedition.” When the Pope had all power it was necessary to prove an enemy a “heretic.” Advancing to-day towards a medical oligarchy, we try to prove that our opponents are “insane,” and (in a Puritan country) to attack their “morals.” We should then avoid all rhetoric, and try to investigate with perfect freedom from bias the phenomena which occurred to these great leaders of mankind.
There is no difficulty in our assuming that these men themselves did not understand clearly what happened to them. The only one who explains his system thoroughly is Buddha, and Buddha is the only one that is not dogmatic. We may also suppose that the others thought it inadvisable to explain too clearly to their followers; St. Paul evidently took this line.
Our best document will therefore be the system of Buddha;<> but it is so complex that no immediate summary will serve; and in the case of the others, if we have not the accounts of the Masters, we have those of their immediate followers.
The methods advised by all these people have a startling resemblance to one another. They recommend “virtue” (of various kinds), solitude, absence of excitement, moderation in diet, and finally a practice which some call prayer and some call meditation. (The former four may turn out on examination to be merely conditions favourable to the last.)
On investigating what is meant by these two things, we find that they are only one. For what is the state of either prayer or meditation? It is the
restraining of the mind to a single act, state, or thought. If we sit down quietly and investigate the contents of our minds, we shall find that even at the best of times the principal characteristics are wandering and distraction. Any one who has had anything to do with children and untrained minds generally knows that fixity of attention is never present, even when there is a large amount of intelligence and good will.
If then we, with our well-trained minds, determine to control this wandering thought, we shall find that we are fairly well able to keep the thoughts running in a narrow channel, each thought linked to the last in a perfectly rational manner; but if we attempt to stop this current we shall find that, so far from succeeding, we shall merely bread down the banks of the channel. The mind will overflow, and instead of a chain of thought we shall have a chaos of confused images. {10}
This mental activity is so great, and seems so natural, that it is hard to understand how any one first got the idea that it was a weakness and a nuisance. Perhaps it was because in the more natural practice of “devotion,” people found that their thoughts interfered. In any case calm and self-control are to be preferred to restlessness. Darwin in his study presents a marked contrast with a monkey in a cage.
Generally speaking, the larger and stronger and more highly developed any animal is, the less does it move about, and such movements as it does make are slow and purposeful. Compare the ceaseless activity of bacteria with the reasoned steadiness of the beaver; and except in the few animal communities which are organized, such as bees, the greatest intelligence is shown by those of solitary habits. This is so true of man that psychologists have been obliged to treat of the mental state of crowds as if it were totally different in quality from any state possible to an individual.
It is by freeing the mind from external influences, whether casual or emotional, that it obtains power to see somewhat of the truth of things.
let us, however, continue our practice. Let us determine to be masters of our minds. We shall then soon find what conditions are favourable.
There will be no need to persuade ourselves at great length that all external influences are likely to be unfavourable. New faces, new scenes will disturb us; even the new habits of life which we undertake for this very purpose of controlling the mind will at first tend to upset it. Still, we must give up our habit of eating too much, and follow the natural rule of only eating when we are hungry, listening to the interior voice which tells us that we have had enough.
The same rule applies to sleep. We have determined to control our minds, and so our time for meditation must take precedence of other hours.
We must fix times for practice, and make our feasts movable. In order to test our progress, for we shall find that (as in all physiological matters) meditation cannot be gauged by the feelings, we shall have a note-book and pencil, and we shall also have a watch. We shall then endeavour to count how often, during the first quarter of an hour, the mind breaks away from the idea upon which it is determined to concentrate. We shall practice this twice daily; and, as we go, experience will teach us which conditions are favourable and which are not. Before we have been doing this for very long we are almost certain to get impatient, and we shall find that we have to practice many other things in order to assist us in our work. New problems will constantly arise which must be faced, and solved.–Book 4 Aleister Crowley
Note on prayer and meditation from Milton Dodd
When I pray or meditate, I try to be quiet in my mind. If I use words, I try to let them come from the dark, echoeing theatre of the mind. No matter how loud the walls are, the emptiness within those halls is vast. The silence is what will last.–MBD 2010
112c. 112d. Quote from Magical Passes by Carlos Castaneda available in complete works below

“Shamans are not spiritual at all,” don Juan said. “They are very practical beings. It is a well-known fact, however, that shamans are generally regarded as eccentric, or even insane. Perhaps that is what makes you think that they are spiritual.
“They seem insane because they are trying to explain things that cannot be adequately described with words. In the course of such futile attempts to give complete explanations that cannot be completed under any circumstances, they must touch on matters outside the understanding of the average man. So of course their explanations seem to be senseless.”

112e. Quote from The Wheel of Time by Carlos Castaneda (available in the Complete Works of Carlos Castaneda below in Poet III)
<i
A warrior takes responsibility for his acts; for the most trivial of his acts. An average man acts out his thoughts, and never takes responsibility for what he does.
The average man is either victorious or defeated and, depending on that, he becomes a persecutor or a victim. These two conditions are prevalent as long as one does not see. Seeing dispels the illusion of victory, or defeat, or suffering.
A warrior knows that he is waiting and what he is waiting for; and while he waits he wants nothing, and thus whatever little thing he gets is more than he can take.
If he needs to eat, he finds a way because he is not hungry. If something hurts his body, he finds a way to stop it because he is not in pain. To be hungry or to be in pain means that the man is not a warrior; and the forces of his hunger and pain will destroy him.
Denying oneself is an indulgence. The indulgence of denying is by far the worst. It forces us to believe that we are doing great things, when in effect we are only fixed within ourselves.
Intent is not a thought, or an object, or a wish. Intent is what can make a man succeed when his thoughts tell him that he is defeated. It operates independent of any warrior’s indulgence. Intent is what makes him invulnerable. Intent is what sends a shaman through a wall, through space, to infinity.
When a man embarks on the warriors’ path he becomes aware, in a gradual manner, that ordinary life has been left forever behind. The means of the ordinary world are no longer a buffer for him; and he must adopt a new way of life if he is going to survive.
Every bit of knowledge that becomes power has death as its central force. Death lends the ultimate touch, and whatever is touched by death indeed becomes power.
Only the idea of death makes a warrior sufficiently detached so that he is capable of abandoning himself to anything. He knows his death is stalking him and won’t give him time to cling to anything, so he tries, without craving, all of everything.
112f. Quote from Ophiolatreia at Sacred-texts.com within heading Miscillenious
<i
Ophiolatreia, the worship of the serpent, next to the adoration of the phallus, is one of the most remarkable, and, at first sight, unaccountable forms of religion the world has ever known. Until the true source from whence it sprang can be reached and understood, its nature will remain as mysterious as its universality, for what man could see in an object so repulsive and forbidding in its habits as this reptile, to render worship to, is one of the most difficult of problems to find a solution to. There is hardly a country of the ancient world, however, where it cannot be traced, pervading every known system of mythology, and leaving proofs of its existence and extent in the shape of monuments, temples, and earthworks of the most elaborate and curious character. Babylon, Persia, Hindostan, Ceylon, China, Japan, Burmah, Java, Arabia, Syria, Asia Minor, Egypt, Ethiopia, Greece, Italy, Northern and Western Europe, Mexico, Peru, America—all yield abundant testimony to the same effect, and point to the common origin of Pagan systems wherever found. Whether the worship was the result of fear or respect is a question that naturally enough presents itself, and in seeking to answer it we shall be confronted with the fact that in some places, as Egypt, the symbol was that of a good demon, while in India, Scandinavia, and Mexico, it was that of an evil one. It has been remarked that in the warmer regions of the globe, where this creature is the most formidable enemy which man can encounter, the serpent should be considered the mythological attendant of an evil being is not surprising, but that in the frozen or temperate regions of the earth, where he dwindles into the insignificances of a reptile without power to create alarm, he should be regarded in the same appalling character, is a fact which cannot be accounted for by natural causes. Uniformity of tradition can alone satisfactorily explain uniformity of superstition, where local circumstances are so discordant.
“The serpent is the symbol which most generally enters into the mythology of the world. It may in different countries admit among its fellow-satellites of Satan the most venomous or the most terrible of the animals in each country, but it preserves its own constancy, as the only invariable object of superstitious terror throughout the habitable world. ‘Wherever the Devil reigned,’ remarks Stillingfleet, ‘the serpent was held in some peculiar veneration.’ The universality of this singular and irrational, yet natural, superstition it is now proposed to show. Irrational, for there is nothing in common between deity and a reptile, to suggest the notion of Serpent-worship; and natural, because, allowing the truth of the events in Paradise, every probability is in favour of such a superstition springing up.” (Deane.)—Ophiolatreia

Proverbs of Solomon 1:10-18: My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit
We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
Proverbs 1:20-22: Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
Proverbs 2:1-6: My Son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding
Genesis 6:2
That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
Genesis 6:4
There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
Note: the “Begat’s” in the front of the Christian Bible were a list of family names, families who had a Bible. One would entreat members of these families for a copy of the Bible.
Demonology by King James I available at
http://watch.pair.com/daemon.html
This attempts to prove by dialogue that Witches exist and are a threat during the Inquisition.
King James I, the editor of the King James Version of the bible, so popular today, was a witch-hunter.
An interesting fact is that before King James I edited the bible, the original word replaced by “witch” was, “poisoner.”
Many innocent victims fell to the witch craze, mostly old Christian women and children. A common charge was destroying crops by looking at them with the “evil eye.”

121. Lakota Woman by Mary Crow Dog is now available at www.google.com/books, nearly in it’s entirety. What a great day, to find this one! A woman’s struggle as an Indian in modern America. This book vies with Black Elk Speaks as the greatest Indian story I’ve read.

Lakota Woman by Mary Crow Dog and Richard Erdoes pp. 59-60
“We supported ourselves by shoplifting, “liberating” a lot of stuff. Many of us became real experts at this game. I was very good at it. We did not think that what we were doing was wrong. On the contrary, ripping off gave us a great deal of satisfaction-moral satisfaction. We were meting out justice in reverse. We had always been stolen from by white shopkeepers and government agents. In the 1880s and ’90s a white agent on the reservation had a salary of fifteen hundred dollars a year. From this salary he managed to save within five or six years some fifty thousand dollars to retire. He simply stole the government goods anbd rations he was supposed to distribute among the Indians. On some reservations people were starving to death waiting for rations which never arrived because they had been stolen. In Minnestota the Sioux died like flies. When they complained to their head agent, he told them to eat grass. This set off the so-called Great Sioux Uprising of the 1860s, during which the Indians killed that agent by stuffing earth and grass down his throat.
122. Heretic’s Heart: A Journey Through Spirit and Revolution
available nearly in full at www.google.com/books. The author of Drawing Down the Moon, Margot Adler, explains her role in civil rights and peace movements, going to Berkeley, and other things that went on in the turbulent 1960s.
